Sundov so glad to get monkey off Painters' back

    Mar 25, 2013
“This is the biggest thing not really for me, but for them (Rain or Shine locals) because they lost (in the Finals) the last time. So we needed this win mentally for us to get up to the next phase,” Rain or Shine import Bruno Sundov on the tea

BIG man Bruno Sundov admitted he was a man on a mission on Sunday when Rain or Shine finally ended a season-long losing streak against Talk `N Text with a rousing 116-85 win in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup rematch at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

So intense was the 7-foot-3 Croatian that he brought the game to his smaller Tropang Texters defenders, either pounding them for inside incursions or nailing shots from beyond the arc.

In the end, Sundov felt gratified in handing the multi-titled Tropang Texters their worst beating of the season that ended Talk ‘N Text’s domination of Rain or Shine.

Prior to the 31-point blowout, the Elasto Painters had lost sixth straight matches to the telecommunication franchise, including a four-game sweep during the Philippine Cup Finals.

“We just got that Talk ‘N Text monkey off our backs,” Sundov said smiling after the game. He finished with 27 points – scored in just three quarters - on a near-perfect 10-of-12 shooting from the field to go along with 16 rebounds, five assists, and one steal.

Sundov said it was tough to see his team lose the All-Filipino Cup Finals against the Tropang Texters, 4-0, by which time he was already here in the country preparing for the Commissioner’s Cup.

“This is the biggest thing not really for me, but for them (Rain or Shine locals) because they lost (in the Finals) the last time. So we needed this win mentally for us to get up to the next phase,” explained the 33-year-old former NBA journeyman center.

Rain or Shine also lost to Talk `N Text in their first meeting last March 13, 76-86.

This time, everything went according to plan, said Sundov.

The Croatian said a strong start, going hard to the basket, and getting their shooters on the right spot allowed them to get the better of the Tropang Texters, who only had one day to prepare against the Elasto Painters following their emotional 93-85 overtime win over Petron last week.

Rain or Shine takes a weeklong respite before returning to action on Easter Sunday when the team goes up against the resurgent Air21 Express at the Mall of Asia Arena.
