SUDDENLY dispensable at Rain or Shine following the arrival of top rookies Raymond Almazan, Alex Nuyles, and Jeric Teng, Ronnie Matias is set to be sent to Air21 Express for a future draft pick.
Rain or Shine governor Mert Mondragon confirmed the team has already agreed in principle with Air21 on the straight swap, which he expects to be consummated over the next week.
A fan favorite at Rain or Shine owing to his hustle plays and humorous tweets, the 6-5 Matias said he is sad to leave the ElastoPainters camp after three seasons with the ballclub.
"Wala naman tayong magagawa e," the Tondo-raised player said.
Matias has been a fixture in coach Yeng Guiao's rotation last season but has seen his playing time dip this season following the arrival of the 6-7 Almazan and Teng.
Matias consequently played just one game this season before being relegated to the reserve list.
However, a move to Air21 may turn out to be a good move for Matias, who can add depth and athleticism to a frontline that relies heavily on 40-year-old slotman Asi Taulava.
