JAPETH Aguilar will be seeing one familiar face over at the Talk ‘N Text bench come the PBA Governors Cup.
The Tropang Texters have tapped the services of import Steffphon Pettygrew, who happened to be a teammate of the 6-foot-9 Aguilar at Western Kentucky University during their US NCAA careers.
Pettygrew admitted he’s heard about how physical the brand of play is in Asia’s first ever play-for-pay league.
“A lot of people say the (PBA) type of play is very physical. That's my type of nature of the game so I'm looking forward to it,” said Pettygrew just before tip-off of Game One of the Commissioner’s Cup Finals between Talk ‘N Text and Rain or Shine at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday night.
Pettygrew has spent most of his career in the Mexican league where he made a lasting impression by banging in a career-high 41 points for Abejas de Guanajato in 2012. His 2015 stats with Abejas included a team-high 22.5 points, along with 8.0 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 33 games.
But since the Tropang Texters have a lot of local gunners to rely on led by Jayson Castro, Ranidel de Ocampo, and Larry Fonacier, the European league veteran said he’ll simply try to fit in.
“I know how to play the game, but I'll just try to come in and help the team as much as I can,” he said. “I run the floor, I play physical. I just love the game so I play hard.”
Pettygrew hopes to win a championship with the Tropang Texters in the season’s final tournament, where he’ll be teaming up with Asian reinforcement Sam Daghlas, the former top playmaker of the Jordan national team.
