ROOKIE coach Jason Webb officially started his reign at Star on Monday by supervising tryouts for rookie hopefuls, insisting that he will get 'the best talent available' in the August 23 proceedings at Robinsons Place in Ermita.

Webb inherited one of the most formidable lineups in the league after Tim Cone moved from Star to Barangay Ginebra and, with no glaring hole to fill in his lineup, insisted he has no specific mold of player in mind for Star's first-round pick at No. 8 overall.

"It's always the best available talent for me. When there's a draft, I always believe that you get the best available talent unless there is a stark need for something," said the former De La Salle Green Archer.

"Kung wala ka talagang sentro, may sentro na available, you have to go there. But definitely, you have to get the best available talent," he said.

As rookie hopefuls started coming in for open tryouts on Monday, former NU star wingman Glenn Khobuntin, UST guard Aljon Mariano, Ateneo guard Nico Elorde and Fil-Am Ryan Wetherell were among the players who impressed.

"Right now, we're just trying to assess the talent," Webb said. "I think the (current) lineup, it's a deck that's been dealt to us. It's not a bad deal for us."

When he gathers the whole team for the first day of practice next Monday, Webb said he will be laying the groundwork for a new system that will take the place of Cone's pet triangle offense.

The son of PBA legend and former senator Freddie Webb is set to introduce a fast paced motion-oriented offense that nonetheless will not totally deviate from the triangle offense which was run by the team since 2011.

"We're gonna talk to the guys (players) and we'll figure out what we will have in store as new para sa mga fans," he said.

The said system will bank on swift ball movement and a faster pace.

"More on movements ang bagong system, pick and roll. Parang European brand of play," said Star assistant coach Johnny Abarrientos.

Some of the top players of Star are in the last phase of their vacation with superstar James Yap in Italy with girlfriend Michella Cazzola. The two-time league MVP is set to return to the country on August 12.

On Tuesday noon, Webb will again call a new batch of rookie aspirants.
