CONSIDER San Miguel's 117-100 thumping of Phoenix a statement.
Christian Standhardinger immediately fired shots at Phoenix import Eugene Phelps, who said the Beermen are "a regular team" without centerpiece June Mar Fajardo.
"I hope he doesn't take this too tough because he just lost by 17 to a regular team. I hope he’s okay," said the Fil-German center, who poured in 29 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks in the lopsided PBA Governors Cup victory.
"I hope he doesn't feel too bad about this because he just lost by 17 against a regular team. That can be tough for the mental state and the psychology behind the player, so shoutout to him. I hope he’s fine."
Though San Miguel has been struggling for the better part of the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup, Phelps' statement two days prior to the game lit a fire in the players' belly.
Even Kelly Nabong shouted, "We're just a regular team!" as he made his way to the Beermen's dugout, within earshot of Phoenix players.
Standhardinger also had the last word, mockingly checking on Phelps' welfare after the runaway loss.
"I'm really worried about him. I hope he's not feeling too down today," he said.
The win helped the Beermen rise to 3-4 while awating the return of Fajardo, who is about two weeks away from a comeback.
"I hope June Mar is gonna come back as soon as possible so we can be a great team again," said Standhardinger before taking another shot at Phelps.
"Right now, we’re just a regular team but we still beat (Phoenix) by 17 so that's good news. I think we overperformed today because for all our regular standards, our skills, and what we can play, we went all out today and that was great."
