Stand-in coach Josh Reyes says TNT musn't be overdependent on Jayson Castro

TNT Katropa stand-in coach Josh Reyes urged his team to step up in the absence of Jayson Castro, believing the Texters superstar alone can’t bring back the team's glory days in the PBA.

Castro sat out the Texters’ opening game in the Philippine Cup on Wednesday night when they surrendered a 101-87 decision to Rain or Shine after the TNT franchise player asked for some time off following non-stop basketball for the last few years.

“Adjustment talaga,” said Reyes, who himself is filling in for new coach Nash Racela until the concurrent Far Eastern University coach finishes his business in the UAAP.

“Sanay naman lahat playing with Jayson, but it shouldn’t be an excuse for everybody including myself. We should’ve done a better job defensively because I felt that if we could’ve made enough stops, enough defensive rebounds, the result could be different.”

“We can’t rely on Jayson to save our season,” he added. “Everybody from the team, we have to do our part to make this conference a successful one.”

Reyes said Castro has only had two training sessions with team and hinted that the TNT star could miss another game before suiting up.

“Hindi ko naman alam ang nararamdaman ni Jayson eh, so I guess it’s up to him when he feels ready,” Reyes said. “It’s only him who knows what’s happening sa katawan niya, so he told me after two games, he’ll be ready.”

While they certainly missed Castro’s offense, the Texters’ defense left much to be desired after allowing seven E-Painters to score at least nine points each.

“Granted, we really struggled making buckets at the start, but if our defense held up, I believe we should’ve had a better chance of winning,” Reyes said. “So that’s where the adjustment will be. We’ll work on it.”
