COOL RIDE: Chris Ross' matte black Ford Explorer reflects his low-key personality

GUESS it’s true what they say that you are what you do, or in this case, drive.

Chris Ross’ Ford Explorer exudes the same aura as the San Miguel Beer guard's low-key game that hardly draws attention but effectively gets the job done.

It's arguable, though, that its sheer size alone merits second looks, but the SUV has a stealthy appearance – and the Fil-American playmaker wanted it that way.

“I just kind of made everything all black,” Ross said as he showed his car after practice. “It’s an under-the-radar kind of thing.”

After selling his Chrysler 300 a few years ago, the Philippine Cup Finals MVP bought his current car, which still sported a stock shiny black paint, before he had it and its rims wrapped with matte finish.

“I just wanted to change it up,” the San Antonio, Texas native recounted. “I’ve always wanted to have a matte car, so I was able to get it wrapped and I also got the tires painted matte.”

The chassis wrap, Ross said, cost around P40,000, while the tire paint job cost another P10,000.

After the Beermen won three of the last four PBA conference championships that came with handsome bonuses, it would've been quite understandable if Ross decides to splurge a little.

But no.

The millionaire athlete is not quite a big spender when it comes to his wheels. He's as frugal as can be as he bought his pre-loved car for “under a million.”

“I bought it second-hand and I had a good deal,” the 31-year-old cager said. “I’m trying to keep my expenses low.”
