JR Quinahan abstains from pork during Lent, urges 'Extra Rice' partner Beau Belga to do the same
From a high of 260 pounds, JR Quinahan has gone down to 235 lbs., thanks to a more disciplined diet. He hopes 'Extra Rice' partner Beau Belga does the same.

ALREADY making sacrifices for the sake of his career, JR Quiñahan is going the extra mile this Holy Week.

The Rain or Shine big man, who has shed more than 20 pounds since the start of this PBA season, vowed to abstain from pork – at least when we retreats to his native Cebu City from Holy Wednesday to Easter Sunday morning.

“Wala munang pork,” Quiñahan said after the Elasto Painters’ loss to Tropang TNT in the Commissioner’s Cup on Monday night when asked of his 'panata' for the Holy Week. “Marami namang isda ‘dun, masasarap at fresh pa.”

But pork dishes are hard to resist in Cebu, known for its native lechon, he was told.

“Lechon? Konting balat lang siguro,” Quiñahan said with a smile. “Sarap kumain ng lechon sa Easter.”

Having a cheat meal even this Holy Week won’t be taken against one half of Rain or Shine's 'Extra Rice Inc.' tandem as he has been working hard to lose the poundage this season.

Quiñahan is seeing the fruits of his labor this conference, where he has scored in double digits in all but one of the E-Painters’ eight games, averaging a team-leading 15.6 points, along with 5.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 23.6 minutes

Quiñahan’s off-court work has not been more evident on the court than on Monday when he reset his career high to 25 points, highlighted by four three-pointers, on top of 12 boards, and two steals in 29 minutes off the bench against the Texters.

“Malaking tulong (ang pagpapapayat) kasi nagagawa mo yung gustong gawin at matagal ka mapagod,” the 31-year-old cager said. “Tsaka every day, nag-e-extra workout at shooting ako.”

“Gusto ko lang din magbawas,” added Quiñahan, who last tipped the scales at 235 pounds after reaching a high of 260 lbs. “Pero nakakapagod din.”

The Cebuano can be excused if he gives in to temptations from time to time.

“Minsan, pag gutom (napapakain),” he admitted. “Pero hindi naman talaga ako malakas kumain ng rice eh. Sa katawan, ganito lang talaga eh.”

“Medyo nagco-control rin pag gabi,” added the burly big man, who has replaced burgers with fruits, particularly apples and grapes, for his midnight snack.

Quiñahan is advising fellow heavyweight Beau Belga to do the same for his own good.

“Siya inaasar ko eh, palaki ng palaki,” he said with a laugh. “Bahala siya. kaya pa naman niya eh.”

“Siguro maiisip niya pag hindi na niya kaya buhatin yung sarili niya (saka s'ya magda-diet),” he said in jest. “Pero para sa akin, dapat magbawas na siya; makakatulong sa kanya.”
