South team to bank on height to conquer the North's small ball play in PBA All-Star game

    TWIN Tower versus Small Ball.

Expect this year’s PBA All-Star game to be played behind such backdrop as the bigger South team tries to upend a defending champion North side that is lacking in size but not in quickness this Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

South coach Leo Austria said he’ll definitely be banking on the giant tandem of June Mar Fajardo and All-Star record-holder Asi Taulava when the team eyes to end a three-game losing streak against the North in the annual spectacle.

But North counterpart Yeng Guiao is looking to counter South’s advantage in size behind speed and outside shooting as he banks on the likes of Terrence Romeo, Jason Castro, and Stanley Pringle.

“Our team has a slight advantage because we’re composed of the youngest and oldest player,” said Austria, referring to starting rookie point guard Scottie Thompson, and the 43-year-old Taulava, seeing action in his 14th All-Star game, a PBA record.

“We will be competitive, of course,” added the San Miguel mentor, who also has in his disposal two other big men in Joe Devance and JR Quinahan.

Guiao however, believes South doesn’t have the quickness to match up with them.

“Malaki nga sila mababagal naman sila. Uso naman ang small ball ngayon, e,” said Guiao, who’s coaching in the All-Star game again after a long while. “Personally, sanay ako na maliit  kami (Rain or Shine), nananalo pa naman. So we’ll find a way.”

The rest of the North also include Calvin Abueva, Marc Pingris, Japeth Aguilar, Alex Cabagnot, Gabe Norwood, Paul Lee, Ranidel de Ocampo, and Troy Rosario, also a rookie.

The South will have two-time MVP James Yap, Jeff Chan, Jericho Cruz, Chris Ross, Marc Barocca, RR Garcia, and Carlo Lastimosa.
