SONNY Thoss admitted Alaska’s sweep of two-time defending champion Star in the semifinals gave the Aces a false sense of invincibility that hastened their downfall against San Miguel Beer in Game One of the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals.
“We came out after we swept Purefoods and we thought maybe it would come easy,” the veteran slotman said after Aces practice on Saturday afternoon. “But it’s a wake-up call.”
Thoss, however, proved one of the silver linings for the Aces regained his vintage form after being a shadow of his true self the entire conference with import Romeo Travis eating up some of his playing time.
Coming in averaging just 4.1 points on 42.9 percent shooting and 3.3 rebounds in 16.7 minutes, 'The Boss' registered 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting, eight boards, and one assist in 23 minutes in the best-of-seven series opener.
It was only his second double-digit scoring game this conference as he emerged one of the few bright spots for the listless Aces.
“I’ve been struggling all conference, trying to get my rhythm going, trying to fit in with the import,” the 33-year-old big man said.
“It’s the finals,” the 6-foot-7 Thoss added. “You have to leave everything on the line.”
“I’m just trying to play my role and be ready,” he added.
Thoss expects the entire Aces squad to come out better prepared in Game Two on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
“We’re gonna come out and ready to play.”
