SONNY Thoss said Alaska’s smashing season debut is the fruit of all the hard work the Aces have done in the offseason.

Australian coach Rob Beveridge and the new dynamics on team defense he taught the Aces, Thoss said, showed in the renewed defensive intensity Alaska displayed in an impressive 93-73 victory over reigning grand slam champion Purefoods Star on Wednesday night.

The Aces were relentless defensively from the opening tip, pressuring the Hotshots’ backcourt no end and forcing 24 turnovers from Purefoods that set the tone for the match.

“Guys are really hungry today. It’s the first game, but we’ve been emphasizing on our defense during the preseason, and now, the guys brought a lot of positive energy and hustling everywhere,” Thoss said.

The Aces ended up enjoying a huge 17-2 advantage in turnover points.

“That’s (pressure defense) something we’ve been working on in the preseason, but there’s still a lot of mistakes, though for the most part, the intensity and heart was there, and it was nice to see,” added the former James Cook University standout.
