Sol Mercado overcomes food poisoning, gets ready to play for Ginebra in Dubai

    May 22, 2015

AFTER battling food poisoning for several days, Ginebra guard Solomon Mercado is ready to play in the PBA Governors Cup game against Rain or Shine in Dubai on Saturday morning (Manila time).

The newly acquired Fil-Am guard has been throwing up and lost a huge amount of fluids even before the team left for Dubai on Tuesday, enduring a tough flight as his illness worsened during the flight.

“I don’t know what he ate, but he’s been vomiting, even the night before he left for Dubai. He vomited like seven times, from the time I got to see him,” said Mercado’s fiancée, popular actress Denise Laurel.

“He told me his ordeal during the flight. He kept on throwing up and right after they landed, he was still puking,” added the star of the hit teleserye, ‘The Other Woman.’

Mercado, however, has managed to join Ginebra's practices in Dubai while resting in between while being attended to by doctors and nurses in his hotel room.

“He didn’t want to be a burden to the team, so he’s been playing through it and doing every activity tasked of him even though he’s been feeling weak and dizzy because of his illness and lack of sleep,” she added.

“He’s been such a trooper. I am worried about him, but I trust his instincts. Sol just wants to come out there and help the team,” Laurel said.

Mercado’s availability should come as a welcome development for a Ginebra team that has lost three of its first four games while playing without Greg Slaughter, Japeth Aguilar, and Chris Ellis.

Aguilar is also expected to return to action in the Dubai game.

Ginebra faces a reinvigorated Rain or Shine team which has already barged into the win column by dealing GlobalPort a 119-112 defeat on Thursday night.
