SOL Mercado looks forward to playing the role of a leader as he returns to NorthPort following a trade with Barangay Ginebra.
The 35-year-old Mercado said he is willing to step in and become one of the leaders of the Batang Pier, with whom he previously played for four years.
“Just try to come in and lead as well as I can,” said Mercado, when asked about what he intends to bring to the Batang Pier camp.
On Wednesday, Mercado was on the NorthPort bench but didn't play against Rain or Shine, just hours after Mercado formally bid farewell to his former ballclub.
He praised the Batang Pier's 'never-say-die spirit' after the team launched a comeback from 25-points down to win in overtime, 107-105.
Mercado said he would'be played if called up on Wednesday.
“I wouldn’t mind playing but it will be kinda hard to come off these emotions, really emotional and come in and play the game. But it’s a business and I have to be professional and move on,” said Mercado.
Mercado is also happy for Jervy Cruz and Kevin Ferrer, who he believes with enjoy more opportunities at NorthPort.
“I’m really excited for Kevin and Jervy for their opportunity to play for their coach who they played for and have that confidence and show what they have ultimately,” said Mercado.
