Nothing personal as Ginebra sparkplug Sol Mercado goes up against former team

IT’S the least thing Sol Mercado could think of, since just like him, Meralco is in its first ever PBA Finals and shooting for a very first league championship.

The stocky guard shrugged off the mini sidebar of the best-of-seven Governors Cup title series that has him facing his former team in the biggest stage of their respective pro stints.

The showdown was arranged after both the Barangay Ginebra Kings and the Bolts ousted their higher-seeded opponents in the best-of-five semifinals of the season-ending meet.

But Mercado is not getting personal about it.

“To be honest about it, I hardly give it a thought,” he said during Thursday’s pre-finals press conference at the PBA Café.

Mercado played for Meralco under former coach Ryan Gregorio from 2010 to 2013.

Despite having gone from Globalport, San Miguel, and Barako Bull, the 32-year-old Fil-Am said he maintains friendship with some of his former Meralco teammates.

“Some of the guys out there remain to be my friends,” he said. “And it’s great going up against them.”

“But we have jobs to do, and I just hope the best for both of us.”
