SOL Mercado hopes his rib injury isn’t serious after being on the receiving end of a wayward Paul Lee elbow midway through Ginebra’s 104-84 win over Magnolia on Sunday night.
Mercado got inadvertently hit by Lee as they were jockeying for position with a little over five minutes left in the game. The ‘Sol Train’ then crumpled near the half court line, grasping for air while favoring his rib area.
He never returned to the game.
“I got elbowed in my rib by Paul but I don’t think he did it on purpose, he just swung through. Then when it happened, I had a hard time breathing so I got scared,” Mercado said.
“After a while I started to feel a little better. It just hurts. It’s tender right now,” he added.
If this injury is worse than it looks, it would be another huge blow for Mercado who already missed significant time in the past due to ankle problems.
The 34-year old guard will get his rib checked first thing in the morning and he can only hope for the best.
“I’m gonna get checked. Hopefully it’s not (damaged),” said Mercado.
“They say it was a bruised rib. If you could see it’s kinda like red, black and blue. Hopefully, it’s just a bruise and not anything more than that.”
