PBA four-peat priceless, but bonus makes SMB aces several folds happier, says Austria

    Apr 11, 2018

ARWIND Santos usually turns to metaphors to describe most situations that San Miguel Beer is in as far as its journey toward sustained supremacy in the PBA is concerned.

Bu the eloquent SMB star was pretty much straightforward on Tuesday night when playing down the financial bonus the Beermen are set to receive as reward for ruling the Philippine Cup for an unprecedented fourth straight season.

Instead of talking about the windfall they are getting from SMC boss Ramon S. Ang, Santos would rather focus on the Beermen’s recent accomplishment that money can’t buy.

“Masaya naman (sa bonus). Lagi naman kaming masaya,” Santos said while taking a break from obliging to fans’ requests for selfies during their victory party at the SMC office on Tuesday night.

“Pero sa akin, hindi naman usapan yung pera dito,” he was quick to add. “Yung na-achieve lang namin, masaya na kami dun.”

According to team insiders, after recent championship runs of SMC group clubs, players were rewarded with bonuses equivalent to nine times their respective salaries.

Under the PBA’s Uniform Players Contract, performance bonuses for players have a limit until the finals, but the league gives teams the freedom to hand out an unlimited amount for championships won.

Apart from the team windfall, some stars also have their separate bonus schemes in their contracts.

SMB coach Leo Austria also played it coy when asked how much they are going to get.

“Meron namang bonus scheme ang PBA, yun ang sinusunod natin, but I think very generous naman ang San Miguel,” Austria said. “Magbibigay yan ng extra sa amin.”

“Every conference naman, hindi dahil sa bigat ng pinanalunan mo,” he added. “Masama naman ang sobra. I’m sure masasaya lagi ang player pag nagcha-champion.”

The Beermen will even be happier if they win the two import-loaded conferences this season that will mark their second grand slam in franchise history.

And there’s no escaping talk of a Triple Crown this time.

“Talagang ganyan. Any team na nanalo ng all-Filipino, binabanggit dyan yung Grand Slam, but it’s still a long shot dahil for me every game is like a championship game,” Austria insisted. “Dahil kung ibibigay sa atin yan, talagang mapupunta sa iyo. To have a chance to get the Grand Slam, you have to work doubly hard para makuha namin yung challenge na binibigay sa amin.”
