SAN Miguel survived TNT in a double overtime thriller, 127-125, in Game Two on Wednesday night in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen took advantage of the ejection of Terrence Jones and the absence of Troy Rosario in the second overtime due to six fouls to tie the series at one game apiece.
June Mar Fajardo sank two free throws with 32.1 seconds in the second overtime to break a 122-122 tie. Jayson Castro slipped on the following play, leading to a Chris Ross lay-up with 15 seconds left to give the Beermen a four-point lead.
The KaTropa were unable to complete their comeback from 17 points down, with Jones ejected in the 21-second mark of the first overtime due to a second technical foul. After hitting crucial threes in the game, Rosario also missed the end game after incurring his sixth foul in the second overtime.
Nevertheless, TNT still had a chance to win the game, but Jayson Castro missed two triples to end the game.
The Beermen looked doomed in the first overtime and go down 0-2 in the series after a Rosario three sent the KaTropa to a three-point with 1:17 left, 114-111. With TNT up by two, Brian Heruela failed to finish off his former team after missing two free throws.
On the ensuing play, Ross found Alex Cabagnot wide open for a lay-up with 0.9 seconds remaining in the first overtime to tie the game at 114.
San Miguel also sent the game into overtime after Terrence Romeo hit a triple to erase a three-point gap and tie the game at 106 with 18.7 seconds left in regulation.
“It was a fantastic game indeed,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria. “But I think we are so lucky. We never gave up and we are able to tie the game. I think that’s the key. When their import was thrown out with his second technical. I have to commend all of my players. They never gave up.”
