SAN Miguel Beer has finally found an import in Ronald Roberts Jr. for the PBA Commissioner’s Cup .
Beermen coach Leo Austria on Wednesday confirmed the signing of the 23-year-old American-Dominican cager as a replacement for first-choice NBA-bound reinforcement Arinze Onuaku.
Austria said Roberts, whose listed height is 6-8, can play either forward and center spots and can complement — not disrupt — stars June Mar Fajardo and Arwind Santos.
“I think hindi siya yung katulad ni June Mar na post player. Pwede siya sa perimeter, sa midrange, tapos si Arwind pwede mag-shift sa three, and then pwede sila pagsabay-sabayin,” Austria said during a lull in the SMB victory party at the company’s head office celebrating the Beermen’s recent Philippine Cup conquest at the expense of Alaska.
“I think ang magbibigay ng magandang outlook sa amin yung versatility ng import,” he added of the St. Joseph’s University product, who went undrafted in last year’s NBA Draft. “Pwede siyang four and five (spot) and then he can run eh. Mabilis siya for a big man sa PBA.”
Roberts last played in the NBA D-League for the Santa Cruz Warriors, averaging 8.8 points on a 63.5 percent clip from the field and 5.8 rebounds in 19.2 minutes in the Summer League.
He is expected to arrive Sunday morning, giving him three days to practice with the Beermen before the start of their back-to-back title bid on Wednesday against KIA Motors.
