REACHING an individual milestone on Friday would’ve been worthier to celebrate for Dondon Hontiveros had Alaska won Game Five of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals against San Miguel Beer.

The Cebuano hotshot became only the fifth player to reach 1,000 three-point field goals made, and climbed to fourth all-time in the list as he surpassed Al Solis after hitting three triples in the Aces’ 93-88 loss to the Beermen.

But rewriting the history books was the last thing on Hontiveros’ mind as he was more concerned with helping the Aces win.

“(It’s a) consolation, pero hindi ko naman inisip 'yun eh,” said Hontiveros, the last to emerge from the Alaska dugout after the loss that left the team in a 2-3 hole. “It’s an achievement, but as a player, you want to give your best to give your team a chance of winning a championship.”

Still, it was a breakthrough worth remembering.

“Nakakatuwa rin. Alam mo na gaano ka na katagal sa liga,” said the 14-year PBA veteran, who now has 1,002 career three-pointers. “For me to be part of it (list), is in a way fulfilling.”

Next on the list is Ronnie Magsanoc (1,171), who Hontiveros is eager to catch if given an opportunity to continue playing as his current contract expires in August.

“Ako, gusto ko pa maglaro and if given a chance to play more years, I will do my best. I’m taking care of my body naman,” the 37-year-old cager said.

But first, Hontiveros hopes the Aces force a Game Seven.

“We’re still in it,” he believes. “We just have to continue playing our game … but we have to execute better and be disciplined.”
