CALVIN Abueva said he has yet to feel the change in the fans’ attitude toward him after Alaska opened its PBA Philippine Cup campaign on a high note behind a 114-98 blowout against Talk ‘N Text on Friday night.
Hated by some for his antics, the enigmatic Aces forward gained the endearment of basketball supporters after putting up a gallant performance for Gilas Pilipinas in the Fiba Asia Championship.
Yet Abueva said he’s not active on social media to be aware of it.
“Hindi ko pa alam eh,” he said after the rout. “Wala naman ako sa social media, kaya okay lang. Kung gusto nila ako, gusto nila; kung ayaw, ayaw.”
“Sa ngayon, wala naman akong nararamdaman na kakaiba,” he added.
Not hearing the usual jeers seem to be a good thing, though.
“Syempre, laro. Yung iba sa Talk ‘N Text nakasama ko yan, kaya masarap maglaro pag kalaban sila, parang sama-sama lang rin sa Gilas,” the national team rookie said.
Abueva, who also represented the country in the Fiba 3x3 World Tour in Abu Dhabi, hardly showed signs of fatigue as he registered 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting, five boards, two assists, and two steals in 24 minutes against the Texters,
“Syempre nakakaramdam rin (ng pagod),” the former NCAA MVP said. “May konti ring pahinga, pero dito sa game na ‘to, hindi pwede pahinga eh. Laro ‘to, kaya kailangan rin mag-sipag.”
“Wala yang pagod. Mararamdaman mo na lang yan pag tapos na,” added Abueva, who heralded his season debut by wearing cornrows. “Ito nanaman tayo, panibago nanamang conference eh.”
