ASIAN basketball legend Shin Dong Pa will return to the Philippines to support the Changwon LG Sakers in the highly-anticipated “Asian Basketball Showdown” against PBA crowd darling Barangay Ginebra on Sept. 9 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Shin, now 70, is considered as one of Asia’s greatest basketball players, best remembered for his deadly outside shooting in the 1960s.
The Sakers, South Korea’s top professional basketball squad, goes up against the Gin Kings at 6 p.m.
Shin, who considers the Philippines as his second home, has visited the country several times since retiring from active play four decades ago and conducted basketball clinics to aspiring Filipino cage players.
The Korean legend also visited the country during the Fiba Asia men’s basketball championships in Manila last year, where South Korea lost to Gilas Pilipinas in the semifinals.
Gilas’ semifinal victory, its first after numerous heartbreaking losses at the hands of the dreaded Koreans, finally ended the country’s 35-year absence in the Fiba World Cup.
The 6-foot-2 left-handed Shin led the Koreans to the 1969 Fiba Asia men’s cage championship in Bangkok, Thailand, with the Philippines landing at third.
That year, Shin’s impeccable outside shooting saw him torch the Filipinos with 48 points on the way to a 95-86 win against a Philippine men’s team led by Danny Florencio, Robert Jaworski, Jimmy Mariano and Freddie Webb.
Meantime, organizers of the Skaers-Gin Kings exhibition match announced on Friday that LG customers who will register online using the sales invoice or official receipt number of the LG product purchased are each entitled to two premium seats (patron tickets).
