ROI Sumang’s manager Lawrence Chongson sees the former University of the East star as a great fit for Rain or Shine, which will have two picks in the coming PBA Rookie Draft.
Although he made it clear that his player will be happy to be picked by any team, Chongson said Rain or Shine will have a gem if they can pick Sumang in the first round to form a possible backcourt tandem with Paul Lee.
Chongson said the 5-foot-8 Sumang being picked by Rain or Shine will be beneficial for Lee.
“Si Roi, parang ‘Angas ng Tondo 2.0,” Chongson, who incidentally is also Lee’s manager, told Spin.ph. “Kasi batang Tondo rin si Roi. Kung mag-teammates sila eh 'di maganda. Makaka-slide si Paul sa natural (position) na two-guard.”
The Elastopainters will be picking third and 12th in the first round of this year’s PBA draft.
At the end of the day, Chongson said it will still be up to Rain or Shine on who to pick in the draft as he made it clear he will not use his influence on Lee so that Sumang will be drafted by the Elasto Painters.
Chongson said Sumang will still be a good pick by other teams in the first round.
“Nasa Rain or Shine na ‘yan. Nasa kanila ‘yung No. 3 tsaka 12. Hindi ko naman gagamitin ‘yung ano ni Paul para diyan. Kanya-kanya silang (diskarte). Marami namang teams diyan na tumatanda na mga guards. Puwede rin doon,” Chongson said.
Lee was drafted second in the 2011 PBA draft that saw Gilas originals Jvee Casio, Marcio Lassiter, Chris Lutz, and Mark Barroca in the same class. For Sumang, he will apply in the draft at the time when most of the Gilas Pilipinas cadets that played in the 2015 Southeast Asian Basketball Championships and the 28th SEA Games will enter the draft.
Sumang was not selected to play for the Gilas cadets this year.
“Parang si Paul ‘yan. Kasabay niya pitong Gilas. Marunong ang Rain or Shina na pinili nila ‘yung pangalawa. Mas matulis lang sumilip ang Rain or Shine. Hindi sila nagpatinag sa mga Gilas, Gilas.
“Like right now, nauulit na naman na nauuna ‘yung mga Sinag. Dagdag sa resume, maganda pakinggan. We’ll see if they commit the same mistake again,” said Chongson.
Chongson believes Sumang is definitely a first-rounder based on his talent and his readiness for the PBA.
“Dapat mga PBA teams ang tanungin mo,” said Chongson, when asked if Sumang is a first-rounder. “Pero kung ako lang, obviously first rounder siya. Uunahin mo pa ba ‘yung mga ibang nababanggit kuno na first rounder kumpara kay Roi.
“Kung tutuusin, top 6, top 7 ‘yan. Ilan ba naman ang game-changer sa listahan?” said Chongson.
“Kaso may mga alaga-alaga,” said Chongson, without elaborating, “may brand ng eskwela ‘yang mga ‘yan. Uunahin nila mga bata nila.”
