Shawn Taggart scores 40 points for ROS, but would rather spread wealth given a choice

    Apr 3, 2017

SHAWN Taggart would rather spread the wealth than carry most of the offensive load like he did in a Rain or Shine loss on Sunday night, 105-102, at the hands of Alaska in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Coming in averaging 26.3 points in his first four games, the Elasto Painters import scattered 40 points on 14-of-20 shooting from the field and 11-of-15 from the charity stripe. Jericho Cruz was the only local to score in twin digits with 11 markers.

“I really don’t want to be scoring that much, but that mismatch I had, I had to take advantage of it,” Taggart said after the game. “I went to the free-throw line a whole lot tonight, and made some free throws. That was the bigger point of my game: getting fouled and just trying to cause problems down low.”

Taggart, though, was glad that Mike Tolomia helped him in a comeback that just fell short.

“Mike, he came out there and he’s a young kid, but he showed no fear. He played hard,” Taggart said of the rookie playmaker, who scored all his nine points in the last seven minutes. “That’s the only thing you could ask for.”

“It’s bad that we lost, but I’m happy for him in the way he played today,” he added.

Still, Taggart, who rounded out his performance with 14 boards, one assist, one steal, and one block in almost 40 minutes, expressed concern after the E-Painters suffered a second straight setback following a 3-0 start to its title-retention bid.

“I just feel like any other team (with back-to-back losses), there’s always concern,” Taggart said. “You got to go in there and we going to have to start going to work. I mean we’ve been working, but now, two losses in a row, we need to focus and keep our eyes on the prize."

“We got to take it step by step, game by game, and just don’t think that everything’s going to be given,” he added. “We got to go out there, we got to take it.”
