CHICAGO — It’s been 23 months and 14 days since Blackwater picked Sedrick Barefield No. 2 overall in the PBA Season 48 Rookie Draft.
In the four conferences that he has played in the league so far, the Bossing have made the playoffs just once, back in the 2024-25 Governors’ Cup.
Outside of that single postseason appearance, there’s been a lot of defeats as the team carded a 15-35 won-lost card during that span.

I asked the serial scorer if he was ready to move.
“I’m grateful to Blackwater for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to compete in the PBA. Right now, I’m focused on letting the business side play out.”
Although he vowed to continue to “ be a professional and give everything I have,” he was non-committal on signing a contract extension once his deal expires in 17 days.
“i’m keeping an open mind. There are a lot of moving parts and we’re still working through everything. I’ll sit down with my agent and make a decision when the time cones.”
Barefield is represented by Reynaldo Punongbayan who has yet to respond to multiple calls and text messages.
LOOKING FOR THE BEST FIT.
As the chatter among the league’s decision-makers intensified as of late, the 29-year old from California is heartened by the attention.
“It’s definitely humbling. As a player you work hard every day hoping your game earns respect around the league. I’m thankful for any team that sees value in what I can bring,” he told me via text message.
With a legendary coach in Tim Cone and fat bonuses that gush like Nile River, every PBA pkayer dreams of joining Barangay Ginebra.

I wondered if Barefield harbored such aspirations.
“I’m excited about any opportunity where I can compete, help a team win, and continue growing as a player. I’m not focused on one destination, I’m focused on finding the best fit.”
The clock is ticking. The countdown continues.
Where would Sedrick Barefield end up?
