Scottie Thompson says he follows Gabe Norwood in 'playing the right way'

    Jan 18, 2021

SCOTTIE Thompson says he feels honored to be mentioned in the same breath as a player such as Gabe Norwood after winning the Samboy Lim Sportsmanship Award during the PBA 45th season Special Awards on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Thompson, winner of the 2018 Commissioner’s Cup Finals MVP trophy, 2018 Most Improved Player award, and was part of the 2018 Mythical Second Team, considers the Sportsmanship Award a huge achievement.

“Lahat naman kami na nominee, sobrang deserving. Sobrang blessed lang dahil following the footsteps of Kuya Gabe for playing the right way,” said Thompson.

“For me, hindi madali itong Sportsmanship Award,” he added.

Norwood previously won three straight Sportsmanship Awards before Thompson was given the citation.

Others who have won the award at least once who are still active are June Mar Fajardo (twice), JVee Casio (twice), with retired players Rey Evangelista and Freddie Abuda, who is part of the Barangay Ginebra coaching staff, capturing the trophy thrice.

The Barangay Ginebra guard accumulated 2,360 points – 2,216 from media votes and 144 from players – to beat CJ Perez of Terrafirma, who tallied 2,069 points – 2,000 from the PBA Commissioner’s Office and 69 from media votes.

“Sobrang happy and truly blessed na all that time of playing the right way at lahat ng sakripisyo [nagbunga],” said Thompson.
