Misfiring Scottie Thompson never lacked confidence when he launched dagger three

SCOTTIE Thompson was on his way to what could have arguably been his worst outing in the PBA Governors' Cup finals between Ginebra and Meralco on Sunday’s Game Five at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

But Thompson patiently waited for his shining moment to come, and he turned from silent contributor to one of the biggest factors behind the Gin Kings taking a 3-2 lead in the championship series.

The former Perpetual star unleashed a dagger of a triple, his only field goal made in four tries, with 44 seconds left and the shot clock running down to put Ginebra comfortably up by nine, dousing Meralco’s late-game rally and helping Ginebra pull away for a 92-81 win before a packed crowd at the Big Dome.

The clutch trey was just his second in 12 attempts from beyond the arc the entire championship series, but the gutsy rookie said he was full of confidence upon taking the shot that came off an LA Tenorio assist.

"Ano lang, nakita ko shot clock, papunta sa akin si LA. Confident ako na itira 'yun. Ayun pumasok naman," said Thompson, who finished with five points, two rebounds, and three assists in 17 minutes of action.

Still, Thompson vowed to bounce back and put his shooting woes aside as he puts his focus on what he considers as the toughest game of the series, when the Gin Kings try to put away Meralco and put an end an eight-year title drought come Game Six on Wednesday.

"Yun yung pinakamahirap na game, yung ico-close na yung series," said Thompson, who has been hitting just 38 percent from the field and 17 percent from beyond the arc in the finals.

"Sabi ni coach Tim (Cone) not too high, not too low, relax lang kami. Wag na isipin ang game na to, next game na kami," he added.
