SCOTTIE Thompson is a cut above most of his contemporaries not just on the court, but off the court where he now has a team of barbers ready to cut your hair.
The Ginebra rising star proved once again that it’s never too early to prepare for life after basketball as he opened Thompson’s Sports Hair Shop in his native Digos City last month and had it blessed on Saturday.
“Habang bata pa, invest lang siguro ng invest kung anong maisip nila, kung anong mabuti sa kanila, kasi talagang hindi panghabambuhay ‘tong career na ‘to,” the 23-year-old cager said in a chat with SPIN.ph. “Hindi namin alam kung kailangan kami matatapos.”
Coming off an impressive freshman year that saw him win a championship and become part of the All-Rookie team, Thompson continued to count his blessings as he put up his own barbershop that caters to customers who have extra money to spare.
“Dati pa lang, pag nagka-pera ako, talagang i-invest ko, gusto ko barbershop, kasi sa amin, wala talagang barbershop na medyo high end, so yun, naglagay ako dun,” the soft-spoken southerner said.
Putting up a capital of nearly P1 million, Thompson is starting to see his investment pay dividends as customers have been continiously coming to the barbershop that’s conveniently located at CPP building along Rizal Avenue.
“Medyo malakas naman so tuwang-tuwa ako,” the University of Perpetual Help product said, adding a handful of investors, this early, have already inquired about putting up a franchise of the shop, although he has yet to entertain any of them, even putting up a branch in Manila.
The quintessential playmaker that he is, Thompson dished out the credit for the shop’s growth to his business partner Stan Chua.
“Siya yung pinapahawak ko habang nandito ako,” he said. “Ang laking tulong kasi siya yung nagma-manage tsaka siya yung may mas alam sa akin sa business. Ako, simula pa lang mag-learn.”
Thompson recommended everyone to try the shop’s best service – the self-named Thompson’s Cut, which costs P120 for regular customer and P99 for students.
“Kaya Thompson’s Cut kasi yung service maganda, meron lahat: free shampoo, masahe, talagang lahat nandun,” Thompson said.
Don’t be surprised if the former NCAA MVP, himself, is the one cutting your hair in the future.
“Plano ko nga, gusto ko matuto kasi pag nandun ako, gusto ko gupitan yung gusto magpagupit sa akin — kung may tiwala sila,” he said with a chuckle.
