TNT’s loss to Magnolia on Friday night has eliminated the Tropang 5G from contention for the twice-to-beat incentive in the PBA 49th Season Philippine Cup.
Though the Tropang 5G have already secured a berth in the quarterfinal round, they will now need to win twice if they hope to extend their Philippine Cup campaign into the semifinals.
TNT slipped to 6-5 with the defeat, and the scenario gets a bit clearer not just for the Tropang 5G but to the other teams after Friday’s win 88-83 by Magnolia over the Tropang 5G.
With the loss, TNT will finish either No. 6 or No. 7 at the end of the eliminations.
The last two games of the eliminations will see also-ran NorthPort against San Miguel, and Rain or Shine versus Barangay Ginebra on Sunday at the Ynares Center-Antipolo.
And based from the remaining scenarios, it is highly likely that TNT will be facing Magnolia again in the quarterfinals.
TNT vs. Magnolia in the quarterfinals
TNT will battle Magnolia in a No. 3 versus No. 6 battle under these conditions:
- San Miguel and Barangay Ginebra win in their matches against NorthPort and Rain or Shine respectively.
- NorthPort and Barangay Ginebra win in their games against San Miguel and Rain or Shine respectively.
Meanwhile, TNT will face Magnolia under a No. 2 against No. 7 contest under this condition:
- NorthPort and Rain or Shine defeat San Miguel and Rain or Shine respectively.
TNT vs. NLEX in the quarterfinals
But while a Magnolia vs. TNT rematch in the quarterfinals looms, there is also a scenario that TNT will be up against NLEX in the quarterfinals under a No. 2 versus No. 7 clash. This will happen when:
- San Miguel and Rain or Shine beat NorthPort and Barangay Ginebra respectively.
Either way, TNT is now one defeat away from kissing its grand slam hopes goodbye in the PBA 49th Season.
