A RAIN or Shine versus San Miguel quarterfinal series in the PBA 50th Season Commissioner's Cup looms following the result of Saturday's contest.

The Beermen defeated Phoenix Super LPG, 116-104, the victory of which allowed them to end the eliminations with a 7-5 win-loss record.

The win allowed San Miguel to avoid NLEX in the quarterfinals as a loss was supposed to send the Beermen at No. 8 and a match-up with the No. 1 Road Warriors.

Instead, the Beermen have a greater chance of battling against the Elasto Painters in the quarterfinals, depending on the result of Sunday's contests that will feature Meralco against Magnolia and Barangay Ginebra against TNT.

Rain or Shine has a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.

Based on unofficial scenarios, Rain or Shine and San Miguel will be going up against each other in three ways in different seedings - wins by Meralco and Barangay Ginebra (4 vs. 5), wins by Magnolia and TNT (2 vs. 7), and wins by Magnolia and Barangay Ginebra (3 vs. 6).

Rain or Shine, on the other hand, will be avoiding a match-up against the reigning Philippine Cup champion if Meralco and TNT win on Sunday.

That will lead to Rain or Shine going up against Phoenix in a 2 vs. 7 match-up, while San Miguel will battle Meralco in a 6 vs. 3 clash at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Regardless of the opponent, Rain or Shine will have to earn its place in the semifinals.

The Elasto Painters' first loss of the conference came at the expense of Phoenix Super LPG, 87-83, last April 21.

Rain or Shine defeated San Miguel, 116-112, on April 8, part of its 7-0 start in the conference, but if there is someone which can overcome a twice-to-win disadvantage, it's San Miguel.
