THE battle for the No. 1 spot in Group B of the PBA 49th Governors’ Cup is still ongoing with Rain or Shine, San Miguel, and Barangay Ginebra out to secure that spot each with one game left to play.
The Elasto Painters currently lead Group B with a 7-2 win-loss record after their 122-112 victory over the Beermen, who are now in a tie with the Gin Kings for second place with identical 6-3 slates.
The three teams will be in action in the final three days of the eliminations with San Miguel going up against Blackwater on Saturday, Ginebra clashing with NLEX on Sunday, and Rain or Shine wrapping up against the Bossing as well on Monday.
Here’s how the three teams can clinch the top seed in their group. The scenarios are unofficial and presented to give readers a better picture of the race for quarterfinal seedings.
Rain or Shine
The easiest way for Rain or Shine to take the No. 1 spot is to win its final game of the eliminations against Blackwater. In this scenario, the Elasto Painters will finish with an 8-2 record, avoiding any ties with the other two teams.
If RoS would end up in a tie, it would have to be with San Miguel for it to still obtain the top seed in the quarterfinals. The Elasto Painters have a better quotient since they won over the Beermen by 10 points last September 19, while losing by just one point in their first round encounter last September 5.
San Miguel
In order for San Miguel to grab the No. 1 seed, aside from winning against Blackwater, Rain or Shine must also lose to the Bossing, while Ginebra needs to win over NLEX. This will force a three-way tie for No. 1 to be broken through the PBA quotient system.
In this scenario, it will be SMB which will win the tiebreak due to a better quotient, thanks to its 49-point victory over the Gin Kings last September 15. RoS will be at No. 2 and Ginebra will be at No. 3.
Barangay Ginebra
For Ginebra, first and foremost, it must win over NLEX. Aside from that, however, San Miguel must also lose to Blackwater, while Rain or Shine must also be defeated by the Bossing the following day.
With these results, the Gin Kings and Elasto Painters will be tied at first place with 7-3 win-loss records, with San Miguel going down to third at 6-4. Ginebra will then clinch the No. 1 seed due to their superior quotient courtesy of their 22-point win over RoS last September 13.
