THE battle for the final playoff spot in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup is down to one game.
At the moment, the eighth spot is occupied by Alaska and Phoenix Pulse with a 4-7 record, with Meralco in 10th place on a 3-7 card.
Both the Aces and the Fuel Masters have finished their campaign in the elimination round, while the Bolts can still force a triple tie for eighth with a victory over San Miguel on Wednesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum
So what will happen in case of a two-way or three-way tie? Read on.
Two-way tie (Meralco loses to San Miguel)
The Aces and the Fuel Masters will battle it out for the eighth and final quarterfinal spot through a playoff match.
Triple tie (Meralco beats San Miguel)
8 Alaska 4-7 (1.012 quotient)
8 Meralco 4-7 (1.011)
10 Phoenix Pulse 4-7 (0.977)
In the event of a triple tie for the eighth spot, PBA rules stipulate that the two teams with superior quotients will battle for the final berth while the team with the inferior quotient is eliminated outright. Hence, Alaska will face Meralco in a playoff for the eighth and final playoff spot in the quarterfinals and Phoenix Pulse will be eliminated outright.
So, Meralco only needs to win over San Miguel to gain a shot at a quarterfinals through a playoff match.
Sounds easy? Not really.
San Miguel is on a roll, having won three straight games following the arrival of Chris McCollough as import replacement for Charles Rhodes and the return of Terrence Romeo from injury. The Beermen are also looking to gain a higher seed in the top six.
Meralco, meanwhile, is on a five-game losing skid. But one thing going for the Bolts is that they won over the Beermen in the 2018 Governors’ Cup, 111-81, in the final game of the eliminations that allowed them to clinch a quarterfinal spot that conference.
