BARANGAY Ginebra's lopsided win over Rain or Shine on Sunday was crucial as it drew the Gin Kings level with the Elasto Painters at second place in the PBA 50th Season Commissioner's Cup standings.

The Gins also boosted their chances of securing the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals after the lopsided win.

The standings of the top four teams after Sunday's games are shown below.

NLEX 9-2
Barangay Ginebra 8-3
Rain or Shine 8-3
Meralco 7-3

In order to secure the No. 1 seed, Ginebra must beat TNT on Sunday and hope that NLEX loses to Titan Ultra on Tuesday, Rain or Shine beats Titan Ultra on Friday, and Meralco loses at least one of its two remaining games.

This will result in a three-way logjam for first place among Ginebra, NLEX, and Rain or Shine with 9-3 win-loss records.

But who gets the No. 1 seed?

An unofficial computation shows that it is going to be Ginebra which will take the No. 1 seed because of a superior quotient of 1.0913 and a +19 points differential. The Gin Kings get the No. 1 seed on the strength of their 24-point win over Rain or Shine on Sunday against their five-point defeat to NLEX.

NLEX will then get the No. 2 seed with a 1.0345 quotient and +7 point differential with the two-point win over Rain or Shine and the five-point victory over Ginebra in their elimination round contests.

Rain or Shine will secure the No. 3 seed in this scenario with a 0.8738 quotient and a -26 point differential following their defeats to Barangay Ginebra and NLEX.

But if Ginebra wants the No. 1 spot, it shouldn't be in a three-way tie with Meralco and NLEX since the Gins will lose the tiebreak via quotient by virtue of their 21-point defeat against the Bolts.

Ginebra also shouldn't be in a tie with NLEX since they lost to the Road Warriors in their elimination-round game.

Of course, Ginebra will drop out of the race for the No. 1 spot if NLEX wins over Titan Ultra on Tuesday.
