WILL a foreign coach be handling the Gilas Pilipinas Women’s team next?
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas disclosed that it's in the process of talking to a number of foreigners who will take over the program previously handled by Pat Aquino.
“Right now we’re still interviewing candidates. So far lahat ng na-interview namin foreign coaches,” SBP Executive Director Erika Dy said in the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum on Tuesday.
Dy however, didn’t divulge the names of the coaches applying for the job.
“We will make the announcement when the time is right,” she said.
Large shoes to fill
Whoever the one to be chosen, the person will definitely have a large shoes to fill in after Aquino was assigned a new task as part of SBP’s talent identification and grassroots development program.
Aquino, who has since been named as interim coach of Blackwater, has taken the women’s team to a different level during his more than a decade of stint.
The 54-year-old University of the Philippines product guided the Philippines to three gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games, led Gilas to Level 1 promotion in the FIBA Women’s Asia Championship.
He was also at the helm of the same team that suited up in the FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Villeurbanne, France prior to his exit.
