LADY cagers Sarah Mercado and Camille Ramos both welcome the big opportunity to play in the inaugural women’s 5 on 5 of the PBA All-Star game on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Mercado and Ramos will go up against each other in the 6 p.m. encounter as part of the first ever side event in the All-Star festivities involving women players.

The two hope the breakthrough would eventually lead to bigger things for lady athletes.

“It’s a first for women’s basketball and being exposed on national television would really be good,” said Ramos, who plays for Alaska in the PBA women’s 3x3 cage tournament.

Mercado, a former varsity player for Ateneo from 2007 to 2011 and plays for TNT Katropa, added the exposure would be a good boost to women’s basketball, which unfortunately, is being overlooked even in a country known for its passion for the sport.

“Here in the Philippines, women’s basketball is … not exactly taken for granted, but lacks attention,” she said.

“So participating in the 5 on 5 during the All-Star Weekend is a big thing. It’s really important for us because it’s an avenue where we can get exposure, or where people would know that there’s really talented women basketball players that need attention.”
