THE way Star benefitted when Allein Maliksi was still with the team, former teammate Ian Sangalang sees Blackwater also gaining the same in return.

And he’s making the endorsement not because he’s a close friend of the deadly gunner from University of Santo Tomas.

“Malaki talaga ang mako-contribute ni Allein sa bago niyang team. Kasi sa amin nga malaki ang na-contribute niya, what more pag napunta pa siya sa isang team na kailangan siya,” said Sangalang.

Maliksi did just that in his first game with the Elite Sunday night when he erupted for 22 points in the team’s 118-107 win over GlobalPort to clinch the eighth and last playoffs berth in the PBA Governors Cup.

Sangalang and Paul Lee were at ringside of the Ynares Center in Antipolo to watch their close buddy play in the early part of the Blackwater-Globalport match.

“Nakita ko nga sila maaga sila dito kasi ka-text ko sila na manonood daw sila ng game ko,” said Maliksi of his two friends at Star.

Maliksi, who turned 30 on Monday, admitted still feeling down about being traded following his four-year stay with Star, where he won four championships, including a grand slam in 2014 under coach Tim Cone.

The feeling is mutual for Sangalang.

“Sobrang nakakamiss. Siyempre lahat naman sinasabi part ng job namin yung mga trade, pero kasi sa isang team meron kang makakasama talaga both outside and inside the court,” said the 6-foot-7 forward from San Sebastian. “Mami-miss din namin si Allein, pero wala naman kaming magagawa na.

“Happy naman kami kung nasaan siya,” he added of the league’s reigning three-point king. ”Ang importante, pare-parehas kaming blessed dahil meron siyang trabaho, meron din kaming trabaho. Puwede naman kaming magkita outside the court after every game.”

Sangalang sees Maliksi establishing himself as one of Blackwater’s upcoming stars.

“Basta mabigyan lang siya ng tiyaga at kumpiyansa para matulungan ang Blackwater,” he said.

Former Star coach Chito Victolero also believes Maliksi will become a valuable asset of the Elite.

“Ngayon ang ganda ng laro ni Allein,” he said. “Yun ang mako-contribute niya, yung outside shots niya, yung pagiging veteran niya. I think maganda naman kung nasaan si Allein ngayon. Lahat naman ng nangyayari may purpose yan.”

“Good luck kay Allein and I know, makaka-recover din siya diyan.”
