SAN Miguel attempts to put a controversy behind it while gunning for a twice-to-beat spot in the PBA Governors’ Cup quarters in a game against TnT KaTropa on Wednesday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
The Beermen battle the KaTropa at 7 p.m.
On the eve of the important battle, the Beermen continued to be mum on a fight that broke out between import Dez Wells and locals Arwind Santos and Ronald Tubid in practice on Sunday.
A person familiar with the situation said the Beermen practiced on Tuesday at the Ynares Center, still behind closed doors just like on Monday at the Acropolis Gym.
Another source added the three players involved as well as Fil-Am Kelly Nabong were barred from joining practices the past few days since the incident.
The Beermen, looking to clinch the final jewel in a season grand slam, were left in disarray when a fight broke out during the team’s practice on Sunday at the Upper Deck Sports Center in Pasig City.
Witnesses said the fight began when Santos set a hard screen on Wells. Witnesses claimed Tubid threw a punch at Wells, leading to Nabong joining the commotion and punching Tubid.
That put a dark cloud over the team ahead of the game against the KaTropa, where the Beermen have a shot at clinching the No. 3 or No. 4 seed, depending on the winning margin.
It is still unclear who will play as an import for the Beermen in the match against the KaTropa. Wells is still on the injured/reserved list, which explains why he was present during Sunday’s practice.
John Holland came in as a replacement for Wells and played for the Beermen in their previous match against Rain or Shine, a game which they lost in Lapu Lapu City.
The KaTropa, meanwhile, have lost three in a row, but can still salvage twice-to-beat advantage with a win.
