SAN Miguel is hoping for the best as it brings in a new import both for its PBA Commissioner’s Cup and East Asia Super League (EASL) campaign.
Torren Jones arrived in Manila Monday night to be the Beermen’s import for the mid-season conference and serve as partner of Quincy Miller in the home and away regional league.
Listed at 6-foot-9, Jones however, won’t be playing his first game until Friday when the defending champions take on Terrafirma Dyip.
Heading to the Beermen’s showdown with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Tuesday, the team holds an even 1-1 record and are coming off a 104-99 heartbreaker against NLEX in a game it led by as many as 19 points.
Team manager Gee Abanilla hopes the 30-year-old Jones won’t have problems securing his playing clearance following the sorry fate suffered by original choice Troy Baxter.
The 28-year-old Baxter failed to secure an immediate playing clearance in time for San Miguel’s conference debut, prompting management to temporarily field Miller as a replacement since he’s been playing for the franchise in the EASL.
Jones is coming fresh from a stint with the Abejas de Leon in the Mexican LNBP, the top professional league in Mexico where former San Miguel import Bennie Boatwright once played.
A product of William Penn University, he previously played in Australia, Dominican Republic, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Libya, and Chinese Taipei.
