LEO Austria admitted San Miguel Beer came to the PBA Commissioner’s Cup not really prepared in the aftermath of the Beermen’s successful title conquest during the All-Filipino conference.
“For me, talagang lack of preparation yung sa second conference dahil nag-dip yung conditioning namin, while other teams nag-load up,” said Austria following yet another loss by the team on Wednesday night this time at the hands of Talk `N Text, 113-93.
Following the setback, the Beermen fell to a 3-7 (win-loss) slate, it’s slim playoffs hopes hinges on a win over Globalport next week while hoping that other teams above them such as Barako Bull, Alaska, and KIA Motors won’t reach five wins to have a mathematical chance of earning a spot in the next round.
The Energy, Aces, Batang Pier, and Carnival all have four wins at the moment.
San Miguel began its campaign in the mid-season tournament by losing its first four games, which Austria attributed to the championship hangover the Beermen had following their 4-3 finals series win over Alaska in the Philippine Cup.
But now, the Beermen coach disclosed the team wasn’t really able to plan ahead.
“Ang biggest lesson sa amin after we won the (Philippine Cup) championship, sana nag-isip na kami ng lahat ng puwedeng mangyari, at nagtanong na kami sa mga nag-champion dati,” Austria said, referring to San Miguel’s sister team Purefoods, which won the Grand Slam last season only to fail come up short in the Philippine Cup where it suffered an early playoffs exit.
The Beermen, added Austria, failed to make an immediate adjustment once the import-laden conference began.
“Ang taas ng nilalaro ng iba pero kami, nasa ibaba. We have to keep on catching up. Eh sa PBA ngayon, well-balanced because of bigger imports,” he said.
Aside from lack of preparation, big man June Mar Fajardo also stressed the Beermen failed to make sacrifices shortly after capturing the All-Filipino title.
“Kailangan naming mag-sacrifice. Nanggaling kami sa championship, sobrang pagod ang katawan pero kailangan naming maglaro kasi trabaho namin ito,” he said.
“Kailangan naming ibigay lahat ng makakaya namin. Di muna namin iisipin yung bakasyon. Iyun yung sacrifice.”
