SAN Miguel formally punched through a quarterfinals berth in the PBA Commissioners Cup as it eked out an 89-87 victory over Rain or Shine Saturday night in Cagayan De Oro City.
The Beermen reached the .500 mark after a long while to improve at 5-5 overall and became the seventh team to make the quarterfinals of the mid-season conference.
San Miguel survived a 5-0 RoS run inside the final minute to register its third straight win.
The loss cut short the Elasto Painters' two-game winning streak, although the team is already assured of a berth in the quarterfinals behind its 5-6 record.
Import Chris McCullough and five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo accounted for the Beermen’s final 11 points in the Petron Blaze Saturday Special.
McCullough had 24 points, 17 rebounds, and four assists as he remained unbeaten in three games since replacing former Best Import Charles Rhodes. His three-pointer with 1:38 left gave the Beermen an 87-82 lead before a Fajardo slam stretched it to a seven-point spread for the team.
Fajardo added 23 points and 15 rebounds, while Terrence Romeo bucked an injured finger to finish with 13 points as the only local to score in double figures for the five-time Philippine Cup champions.
Rookie Javee Mocon led Rain or Shine with 20 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range. The freshman guard also added seven rebounds and eight assists.
Import Carl Montgomery had 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Rey Nambatac contributed 11 on 3-of-7 shooting from three-point range for the Elasto Painters.
