SAN Miguel Beer tries to bury Barangay Ginebra in a hole that only the Beermen have climbed out when Game Three of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals is played on Tuesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Beermen, the only team ever to overcome a 3-0 hole in a playoff series, seek to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series following two contrasting wins – a lopsided 12-point win in the series opener and two-point overtime victory in Game Two on Sunday night.
Ginebra, though, knows how to come out of a 0-2 hole as it has won two of its last three games when trailing 0-2 in a best-of-seven series, according to chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III, the most recent vs Star in the last edition of the all-Filipino conference Final Four.
That’s why the Beermen are not letting their guard down in Game Three that tips off at 7 p.m.
“Basta kami, kailangan naming…i-adjust yung depensa namin,” June Mar Fajardo said. “Expected na next game, bibigay nila yung best nila kasi mahirap makabangon sa 0-3.”
“Yun din ang goal namin, maipanalo yung Game Three para mas lumaki yung chance namin makapasok sa Finals,” the four-time reigning MVP added. “Kailangang maging ready next game.”
Fajardo came prepared in Game Two, scattering 33 points on 11-of-18 shooting, 19 boards, two blocks, two assists, and one steal in Game Two after being held to just nine points in the previous game.
And expect the 6-foot-10 slotman to sustain his dominant form and for the snipers, led by Marcio Lassiter, to keep finding their marks to push the Gin Kings on the brink of elimination.
“Talagang kailangan makapag-focus pa rin kami eh. Kaunti na lang eh. Bakit pa kami bibitaw,” said Arwind Santos, who hit two crucial three-pointers, the second that sent Game Two to an extra session, to make up for a misfiring start.
