SAN Miguel Beer hopes to avoid complacency this time as it tangles with struggling Star on Saturday in the Smart Bro-PBA Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Rescued by Arwind Santos’ buzzer-beating putback after a lackluster display in a 106-105 victory over middle-of-the-pack squad Barako Bull last Sunday, the Beermen are eager to bring back their A-game against a Hotshots side that has lost its last three games.
Tipoff is at 5:15 p.m. with the defending champions seeking a sixth victory in seven games to regain a share of the top spot with Alaska.
“Never underestimate yung kalaban,” star center June Mar Fajardo said. “Sabi ni coach pag malakas yung kalaban, malakas rin kami, pero pag medyo mahina, parang sumasabay kami sa level nila.”
Hotshots coach Jason Webb that same mentality will benefit his team, which is taking on a star-studded sister team that ruled the last all-Filipino conference.
“It doesn’t matter (that they’re the defending champions),” the rookie coach said. “Whether it’s the top team or the number twelve team, we treat them the same.”
Fajardo, who put up another dominant showing of 28 points and 20 boards against the Energy, once again anchors the Beermen, while James Yap tries to redeem himself after committing a couple of miscues late in their 107-102 defeat at the hands of Alaska last Tuesday.
Two other struggling teams situated at the bottom, Meralco (1-6) and Mahindra (1-5) , face off earlier at 3 o’clock.
