ANTIPOLO – San Miguel Beer flashed its dominant form anew as it dispatched shorthanded Blackwater, 108-96, to gain some steam in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday at the Ynares Center.
After shrugging off an early deficit, the Beermen were in cruise control the rest of the way to register their second straight win after starting the conference with a loss.
Tyler Wilkerson, coming off a 52-point performance, posted another solid game of 35 points, 17 boards, and four blocks, while June Mar Fajardo showed he’s near tip-top shape as he added 20 points and seven boards.
“Slowly, we’re recovering,” SMB coach Leo Austria said. “Bumabalik na yung laro ng mga players.”
The Elite, missing playmakers Mike Cortez and Jerick Canada, absorbed a second straight defeat to fall below .500 with a 2-3 win-loss record.
MJ Rhett failed to carry the Elite as the import’s numbers were a far cry from that of Wilkerson, contributing a measly 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting, 14 boards, three assists, and one block against five turnovers in 31 minutes.
Wilkerson, though, picked up from where he left off as buried four triples, one that gave the Beermen their biggest lead at 80-55 near the end of the third period.
Seven players, led by JP Erram and Carlo Lastimosa, scored at least nine points for the Elite, but the balanced production failed to make up for Rhett’s lack of contribution.
Blackwater led by five points midway through the first quarter, but couldn’t protect it as they played catch-up the rest of the way and couldn’t come closer than 14 points in the final frame.
