SAN Miguel steadied in the second overtime to pull off a 101-95 win over Ginebra on Sunday night to move up the leaderboard in the PBA Governors Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.
AZ Reid took over in the second overtime, opening a 109-103 lead for the Beermen that finally held on a rare night in the pro league when two games both went into two extra periods.
Reid finished with 26 points, including six of the team's 10 in the second overtime when the Beermen threw down the gauntlet and snapped the Gin Kings' three-game winning streak.
June Mar Fajardo and Marcio Lassiter added 17 points apiece while Alex Cabagnot and Ronald Tubid had 16 and 14, respectively, as San Miguel improved to 4-1 (win-loss).
Ginebra fell to 4-2.
"Wala na ako masabi sa mga players from both teams, talagang ginawa nila lahat para manalo," said SMB coach Leo Austria at the end of a much-hyped match that lived up to its billing.
Ginebra refused to fold despite facing sizeable deficits in regulation, overcoming an 85-78 deficit and tying the game at 89-all on Justin Brownlee's basket with 30.1 to go.
Japeth Aguilar then blocked Fajardo's shot in the final play to send the game into overtime.
Aguilar, who had 13 markers, made his presence felt anew in the first overtime, unloading a game-tying triple and intercepting a pass to Fajardo to keep the game tied at 101-all.
But Reid took matters into his own hands in the second overtime, scoring six points to give the Beermen a 109-103 advantage they never relinquished.
Brownlee led Ginebra with 38 markers, while Tenorio and Devance had 17 and 16, respectively.
