San Miguel basketball chief denies Abanilla being tapped to replace Racela

    Jun 8, 2013
“He’s (Abanilla) part of Petron. He’s still the assistant coach. Di naman kami nagpalit,” says SMC head of basketball operations Robert Non. Jerome Ascano

SAN Miguel Corp. basketball operations head Robert Non on Saturday denied rumors that outgoing La Salle coach Gee Abanilla will be elevated to the head coaching role to replace Olsen Racela in Petron Blaze.

“No, that’s not true,” Non told Spin.ph, in response to rumors that Abanilla’s coaching exit from La Salle is connected to the plan of moving him up as the Boosters’ new head coach.

The soft-spoken Non, who currently serves as the PBA’s board chairman, reiterated that Abanilla remains as one of Racela’s assistant coaches.

“He’s (Abanilla) part of Petron. He’s still the assistant coach. Di naman kami nagpalit,” he added.

But Non, did mention that San Miguel group, which owns PBA teams Petron, San Mig Coffee and Barangay Ginebra, is constantly evaluating everything as part of its commitment to excel and improve.

“Kami naman kung titingnan mo, every month or every two months, nagre-review kami ng lahat ng ginagawa namin. Even the players kasama dun sa review,” Non added.

Spin.ph earlier reported that Abanilla is on the way out of La Salle after spending just one season with De La Salle. In his one-year coaching stint, Abanilla guided the Green Archers to a 10-6 record.

Abanilla exit ends his ties with the Archers, with whom he has served as an assistant to Franz Pumaren, who steered the team to five UAAP championships in 12 seasons starting in 1998.
