SAN Mig Super Coffee continues its quest for a third successive PBA title when the Mixers take on giant-killing Air21 Express in Game One of their Commissioner’s Cup best-of-five semifinal series on Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Just last Saturday the Mixers ended the reign of the Alaska Aces after winning their sudden-death game for a 2-1 series victory in the quarterfinals that set them up for a Final Four showdown against the Express.
But San Mig coach Tim Cone is not about to become complacent, pointing out that Air21 is no longer a pushover in light of the Express’ stunning upset of second seeds San Miguel Beermen in the playoffs.
“They are a lot different team now than before because they are coming off a win against San Miguel,” noted Cone, who is eyeing a 17th league championship.
“They (Express) kind of match up and that’s difficult for us. They have big men shooters so they kinda extend us defensively, but we’ll see if we can find some cures for that,” he added.
The Mixers and Express collide at 8 p.m.
Meantime, Air21 hopes its confidence-building quarterfinal victory against San Miguel would carry over in the race-to-three-win semifinal series.
Sean Anthony and ageless center Asi Taulava churned out huge numbers during the quarterfinals as the duo blended well with import Wesley Witherspoon.
Anthony is expected to be the focal point of San Mig’s defense, while Taulava will have to contend with the Mixers’ resident frontline defender of Rafi Reavis and backup Yancy de Ocampo.
