SAMBOY Lim showed no signs there was something wrong with him moments before he collapsed in the bench during an exhibition game Friday night and eventually lapsed into coma.
Designated PBA Legends coach Bogs Adornado recalled Lim was actually even in high spirits prior to the fateful incident that took place at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
“Wala siyang senyales na may iniinda siya. Wala siyang reklamo. Naglaro pa nga siya for seven minutes. Naka-dalawang three points pa bago ko sila nilabas ni Bal (David),” said Adornado in a phone patch interview with Spin.ph.
Adornado said he even shared some light moments with the 53-year-old cager inside the dugout while waiting for the Legends’ delayed game against butlers and staff of Resorts World Hotel.
“Ang tagal namin sa dug out. Nakikipag-biruan pa siya. Katunayan, si Nelson (Asaytono) niloloko pa siya,” he said.
“Sabi ni Nelson, eto si Samboy oh. Kundisyon yan. Nag work out pa ngan yan bago ang game ngayon,” recalled Adornado who even revealed how a shirt-less Lim was flexing his well maintained muscles before them.
Asked if the game was intense enough, the soft-spoken three-time PBA Most Valuable Player claimed the match was actually more of a ‘fun game.’
“Wala. Hindi ganun ka intense ang game. Kasi naglalakad lang mga players, kasi may edad na sila lahat. Wala ngang fastbreak,” Adornado.
“Kaya nga nagulat kami nung bigla siyang nag-collapse na lang.”
“Umupo siya sa bench eh. Nakita pa siya sa likod na nag i-stretch ng braso niya. Tapos bigla na lang nabuwal. Nahulog. Walang sinabi na nanghihina siya bago yun,” said Adornado. “Biglang kumalabog lang. Nagkagulo nun kaya nag time out ako.”
Lim according to Adornado was immediately rushed to the Medical City in a private car by teammate and fellow PBA great Alvin Patrimonio.
Asked if Lim was given a CPR while lying unconscious, Adornado said no.
“Hindi na na-CPR kasi wala pang two minutes na nakahiga siya. Tinakbo na namin sa ospital. Kasi walang malay. Ginigising namin pero di magising,” he said.
So far, no medical bulletin as of post time has been issued by the family of Lim as doctors continued attending to him at the ICU of the Medical City.
A source told Spin.ph Lim is already taking maintenance for high blood.
Philippine Heart Center Senior cardiology consultant Dr. Lito Durante shared to Spin.ph that the case of Lim may have something to do with his high blood.
“Pwedeng yun (stroke) ang maging cause nung collapse niya kung high blood siya,” said Durante.
“Very physical ang basketball, kaya very risky talaga,” he added.
Durante also warned individuals, especially those above 50 years old who engage in strenuous physical activities to be more conscious of the repercussions of playing physical games.
“Pag nag exercise ka, na-i-stress ka pwedeng mag precipitate ng stroke. Kaya yung mga athletic na tao dapat may regular check-up para malaman kung may danger siya,” he said.
“Hindi na siya bata. So posibleng may risk factor. Pwedeng may altapresyon siya. May good chance siya na ma stroke. I am not saying na na-stroke siya. Pero pwedeng ganun,” said Dr. Durante.
The former Philippine College of Surgeon president also bared athletic people are prone to two kinds of stroke: brain and heart.
“ Kaso na yun pwedeng heart attack yun, pwedeng hindi. Two things either nag cardiac arrest or stroke. Brain stroke. Dalawa ang stroke. Either way, mag-co-collapse,” he said.
“Senyales ng atake? Yung iba merun. Yung iba, wala. In most cases may chest pain. Brain stroke. Pag mataas presyon,” added the heart surgeon.
