    Samboy Lim honored with 'Skywalker' statue in Valenzuela ceremony

    PBA great Avelino 'Samboy' Lim has become one of a few Filipino basketball players to have a statue erected in his honor.

    On Sunday, the Valenzuela city government, through Rep. Eric Martinez, unveiled a statue honoring the beloved 'Skywalker' infront of one of the NBA-theme basketball gyms built in his district.

    Present during the unveiling were Samboy's dear friend Allan Caidic, former PBA player and Valenzuela official Gerald Esplana as well as the PBA legend's former wife Darlene Marie Berberabe and daughter Jamie Christine.

    "I just thanked Congressman Martinez for the tribute to our friend Samboy and expressed hope that Samboy can be an inspiration to the youth of Valenzuela," said Caidic, who spoke during the unveiling ceremony.

      Lim, 56, is one of the most popular Filipino basketball players of all time, endearing himself to millions of fans with his high-wire act, fearless drives and humility.

      He has been bed-ridden since collapsing on the bench while playing in a legends game back in November 28, 2014.

      Lim may not be the last Filipino player to get a statue in Valenzuela.

      Martinez has told SPIN.ph that he also plans to have statues of Caloy Loyzaga, Mon Fernandez, Robert Jaworski and Caidic himself built in his city.
