Pido Jarencio does a Steve Kerr, lets Arana draw up play in late GlobalPort timeout

GLOBALPORT continued to show a collective effort in the absence of Terrence Romeo - not only on the court, but also during a late timeout - in the 108-91 win over Kia in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday night.

The Batang Pier regained a comfortable cushion down the stretch, so much so that coach Pido Jarencio had the luxury of relaxing a bit and handing the whiteboard to veteran Ryan Araña in a late timeout and let him map out a play.

"Si coach kasi, kilala naman natin na very cool yan eh, parang tropa mo lang pag nasa court, kahit sa practice," Araña related. "Kanina, habang naghu-huddle sila, umupo lang ako then binigay sa akin yung board: 'Sige, Ry, ikaw mag-drawing ng last play for Stanley.' So nag-drawing ako and everyone was listening."

"Yun 'yung kagandahan sa team namin kasi si coach Pido, pwedeng biru-biruin mo lang eh. At the same time, respeto namin kay coach Pido is mataas," he added. "so yun siguro yung advantage namin sa ibang team na okay coach Pido, parang barkadahan lang yung samahan."

It seems Araña, who finished with two points, eight boards, and two assists in 14 minutes, has a future in coaching as the play he drew up resulted in a basket - although indirectly.

"Yung last (offensive) play namin is 'Y' pero pag dating ng eight seconds, bababa na yung dalawang bigs, magwa-one-on-one na si Stanley," Araña recounted.

"Naka-score kami, naka-score si Stanley, pero nag-sub, kaya hindi natuloy yung play, so galit na galit ako sa gilid," he added with a smile. "Si coach Pido, tinatawanan lang ako."

Araña, who turns 34 next month, believes that late timeout reflects the atmosphere in the team that has produced results and is a step closer to making a playoff return at 5-5 even in the absence of their injured star guard.

"Kahit talo o panalo kami, si coach Pido positive lagi. Lagi niyang sinasabi na 'Tapos na yun, past is past na," Araña said. "Looking forward na tayo sa next game natin."

"Tapos he always gives us long breaks - hindi naman long break, pero mga two days off. Ngayon, binigyan kami ng two days off, practice, tapos two days off ulit, so kami naman, ayaw naman namin abusuhin yun," he added. "Gusto namin na pag sa game, ibigay din namin best namin. And yung result naman is maayos naman."
