TNT coach Chot Reyes didn't mince any words when asked about the performance of RR Pogoy in Games Four and Six.

“Pangit,” said Reyes when asked by a reporter who described Pogoy’s game in the losses as “medyo hindi maganda.”

Fortunately for the Tropang GIGA, Pogoy regained his offensive touch when it mattered most, scoring 27 points on 10-of-19 shooting in the 97-79 win over San Miguel in Game 7 of the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup semifinals.

Pogoy struggled with two and six points apiece, and a combined 3-of-20 shooting including 0-for-6 from threes, in the Game 4 and 6 defeats which left top seed TNT's title hopes hanging in the balance.

Pogoy said Reyes spoke to him about focusing on defense, which has been calling card ever since.

“Sa totoo lang, sinasabihan ako ni coach na huwag ako mag-focus ako sa offense ko. Dati, kinukuha nga ako sa Gilas dahil sa depensa ko. Tapos ‘yung offense ko, susunod na lang daw ‘yan,” said the Cebuano gunner.

The former Far Eastern University guard connected on four three-pointers, most of which came as backbreakers to San Miguel’s bid to come back in the match. His final three gave TNT a 95-71 lead with three minutes left.

Pogoy also took pride in his defense, particularly on Terrence Romeo and Marcio Lassiter, who was held scoreless in Game 7, missing all eight of his field goal attempts including four from three-point distance.

Romeo was held to nine points before limping off because of injury.

“Focus ko lang talaga depensa kay Terrence, Marcio. Blessed lang talaga na dumating din offense ko,” said Pogoy.

Pogoy now braces for Magnolia, which he thinks will even be much tougher opponent.

“Kung mahirap ang San Miguel, siguro sa finals, mas mahirap pa ‘yung Magnolia kalabanin namin. Maganda takbo nila ngayon. May dahilan naman kung bakit sila nasa finals,” said the Gilas Pilipinas mainstay.
