RR POGOY delivered the telling baskets in overtime as TNT KaTropa spoiled Magnolia's season debut with an 80-75 victory on Sunday night in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Pogoy, recently called up by Yeng Guiao to the national team, hit a three-pointer and a fadeaway jumper with 29 seconds left in overtime to open a 79-74 lead for KaTropa in a game where they played catch-up majority of the way.
Troy Rosario also came up clutch for the KaTropa in the final seconds of regulation, converting the short stab off a perfect pass from Jayson Castro with 2.1 seconds that tied the score at 72-all.
Pogoy scored 26 points and shot 10-of-24 from the field, half of these on threes, as the KaTropa improved to 3-3 while dampening the return to action of last season's Governors Cup champions.
Jio Jalalon split his two free throws with 10.3 seconds to give Magnolia a two-point lead that was wiped out by Rosario's late basket.
“We took advantage of the Hotshots dahil first game nila. Buti naman nag-pay off. Tiniyaga namin ‘yung mga rina-run namin,” said TNT coach Bong Ravena.
Castro compiled 24 points, five rebounds, and four assists, none bigger than the pass he issued to Rosario to force overtime. Rosario added 15 points for TNT.
The loss spoiled Robbie Herndon’s career-high 16 points. Ian Sangalang added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Hotshots.
Paul Lee was scoreless in 13 minutes after sustaining an injury.
